Albendazole is an antiparasitic drug that is used to treat tapeworm infections in people and animals. It can also be used to treat or prevent cystic echinococcosis in people, Strongyloides stercoralis adults, and cattle. It has been shown to be effective against helminths (worms) including alveolar echinococcosis, the rat lungworm, the roundworm Toxocara canis, hookworms which are found in dogs and humans in areas where there has been poor sanitation. Albendazole was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1985, and is sold under the trade name Albenza.
